gift tracker

hello there.

i was very happy to finally cut through the red tape and figure out how to wire our money to sudan.

for those of you who gave, or emailed, or thought nice thoughts, or prayed; from the bottom of my heart: THANK YOU.

i was overwhelmed with the generosity of each of you and i don't know how to thank you.

now for the details:

total amount raised: $1885 USD

this equals: 4128 SDG (sudanese pounds)

exchange rate is 1 USD = 2.19 SDG

the money was sent to two sudanese people, as i discovered that you must be a sudanese national in order to receive funds sent to sudan through western union.

eskandar, my close friend, praise leader, and teacher for the boys was sent: $1000 or 2190 SDG

priscilla, my close friend, pastor and mother for the boys was sent: $885 or 1938 SDG

i gave each of them similar tasks of distributing the money on a monthly basis over the next 6 months.

combined distribution over the next 6 months will go:

600 SDG = food
200 SDG = transportation for boys to school or hospital visits (it's actually quite expensive)
200 SDG = medication (actually very inexpensive)
200 SDG = various repairs or needs (new clothes, sandals, bedding, and underwear for the boys; also includes paying for water, electricity, and repairs on the center)
800 SDG = school fees for 8 boys (includes books and uniforms)
600 SDG = luka's salary and school fees (he is now in secondary school which costs more)
200 SDG = to any local family/church/ministry of their choosing
300 SDG = yohanna, former headmaster of the school who has a wife and 3 little girls
438 SDG = priscilla's salary for helping the boys over the next 6 months
590 SDG = eskandar's salary for helping the boys over the next 6 months and to pay for his university fees

total SDG = 4128

i have weekly phone calls with eskandar, priscilla, and luka to discuss how the funds are being spent. i also have a close non-sudanese friend who is in the process of checking in on the expenditures. i hope if any of you have any questions about all of this, you won't hesitate to ask me or throw me some pointers.

what can i say? thank you so much. i have felt very hopeless about this situation for a very long time. your checks and emails and thoughts encouraged me more than you can know.

thank you.

also, praise to the One who gives us all we can hope or think or imagine, abundant Love, in Himself. when we have this we are truly full, fully rested, and utterly satisfied. i want this for those boys more than anything.

peace to each of you.

how does your money help?

$1 American = 2 Sudanese Pounds (SP)

$2.50 (5 SP) will buy enough food to feed 4 grown men one meal

$100 (200 SP) will pay for one full year of elementary or secondary school for one boy

$50 (100 SP) buys one big bag of beans to feed 100 boys one meal

hello everyone.

i'm writing because i've just received some recent news regarding the street boys in sudan that i lived with last year, as some of you know.

there were many complications at the children's center, most of which revolved around lack of funding and staff. i had to leave the country because my visa expired and the staff agreed to close the center. however, several boys with tough family situations, or no family at all, have continued to live on the center with little or no care. the oldest boy, luka, is 18 and has acted as the sole caretaker for the 10 or so younger boys.

two days ago, luka emailed in broken english that the boys are in need of money. some are trying to enroll in school again which also costs money. many days they don't have anything to eat. also, he wrote to say that priscilla, the boy's pastor and my best friend while in sudan, has been fighting malaria and she doesn't have money for medicine. at the bottom of this posting is luka's email to the old director of the center, who is not able to get back into the country.

i have been saving money since i returned to send to some of the old staff members, luka, and the boys. i'm very worried about my brothers in sudan. i don't know what will happen to the center, but i have to do something. i have a lot of trustworthy european and american contacts in sudan who i will be sending the money to.

i don't know what else to do but to contact everyone i know to ask for help. please help me. i will be wiring the money in one week to a western union that my friend will receive and help distribute accordingly.
